Insomnia
Chapter 5

Sango stared out into the night. Sighing, she got up and motioned to Kirara. The cat demon wiggled out of bed and trotted beside Sango into the forest. Sango sighed. The night before last I didn’t sleep well. Tonight I can’t sleep at all. What’s wrong with me? Kirara nuzzled her leg and Sango smiled down at her. “You are such a lovely kitten,” Sango told her. Kirara wound around her legs and mewed up at her.
“What is it with you lately?” Inu-Yasha snorted from the tree above her. “Four nights ago, Kagome had insomnia. Then Miroku caught it. Last night it was Shippo out in the woods at night. Why can’t you just go to sleep?”
“Kagome and I were out here the night before last,” Sango offered.
Inu-Yasha scratched a ear. “I fell asleep for a few hours. That was it.” Inu-Yasha offered those meager sentences as an explanation for why he didn’t hear them.
Sango shrugged. “I just couldn’t sleep tonight.” She looked at Inu-Yasha. “Houshi-sama was up, too?”
Inu-Yasha nodded. “Yeah. He couldn’t sleep. We took a walk, he talked, and then he felt tired.”
“What did he talk about?” Sango asked curiously. What? Why do I want to know?
Inu-Yasha smirked. “I asked him if I was wrong.”
“Wrong about what?”
“That you and him like each other.”
Sango stared at Inu-Yasha. “I do not!” she argued.
Inu-Yasha snickered. “Want to know what he said then?” Without waiting, Inu-Yasha went ahead. “He said that he liked you the way I like Kagome.”
Sango looked at him. Really looked at him. Inu-Yasha was sitting there, staring at her for her reaction. Not like an evil demon who’d just spilled a secret, but more like a young man wanting to know if his feelings were returned. “Oh, really?” she said. She hid a smile and said with complete calmness, “He must really like me a lot.”
Inu-Yasha’s face turned into a stormcloud. “I do not like her!” he said.
Sango giggled. He sounds like a boy who just found out there are girls and is trying to deny the fact! “Well, what if she likes you?”
Inu-Yasha almost fell out of the tree. “She does not,” he protested. “She’s a human and I’m a hanyou.”
“I’m a demon exterminator and Houshi-sama’s a groping lech. There are bigger hurdles to go over than species.” Sango told him. She yawned. “I’m feeling tired.” Kirara walked before her as they went back to the camp. Sango could hear Inu-Yasha mumbling behind her and she smiled.
