Sango yawned herself awake in the middle of the night. She hadn’t slept well for most of the night she’d been asleep. It had to be at least a few more hours until dawn. She shook her head. Maybe if she took a walk, she’d feel better.
As soon as she moved, Kirara jumped up and padded off into the forest with her. Sango inhaled the wet scent of night as soon as she was out of the camp.
Something snapped behind her and she whirled. Kagome waved at her. “Mind if I join you?” she asked. Sango nodded. Kagome caught up. “You can’t sleep?”
“I haven’t slept well most of the night. I thought if I got up and got a little exercise I’d wear myself out enough to sleep.”
Kagome nodded. “Me, too. I haven’t been sleeping well lately.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised. Is it Inu-Yasha?” Sango asked.
Kagome’s eyes went wide. “Wh-why would it be him?” she asked stammering.
“He was getting into a lot of arguments with you today. More than usual, if that’s possible,” Sango observed.
“And Miroku was after you today,” Kagome said unhappily. She mimicked his groping hands.
Sango grimaced. “Uh-huh. It’s a wonder he can sleep with that many bumps on his head.”
“You know... Nah, that can’t be it.” Kagome ended her thought. Sango waved her on. “Well, sometimes boys in my time pick on you to let you know that they like you. They want attention from you and the only sure way they know is to make you feel bad.”
Sango thought for a moment. “It would explain a few things.” She shook her head. “But I don’t like Miroku like that.”
Kagome shook her head. “And I don’t like Inu-Yasha.”
The girls looked at each other and sighed. “Well, maybe... A little.” Kagome shrugged.
Sango smiled weakly. “He’s not so bad.”
They laughed. “We’re this bad?” Kagome gasped. They got under control. “Okay, okay. We can admit that maybe we like them. Can we admit something we like?” Kagome sneaked a sly look at Sango.
She stared at the ground. “Well....”
“Yes?”
“I’ve always wondered if his hair is as soft as it looks,” she said softly.
Kagome nodded. “That’s good. I’ve always wanted another shot at Inu-Yasha’s ears. They were so soft the first time.” She sighed. “I’ll probably have to pin him to a tree like Kikyo did to get another chance.”
The girls giggled together and Sango felt relieved and suddenly tired. She and Kagome went back to camp and back to bed.
